Whether the aim of your adventure is to look out onto Queen Victoria’s Balmoral cottage of Glas-allt-Shiel or simply to head up into the mountains for some beautiful views, the Loch Muick and Broad Cairn Walk is a fantastic journey that will be sure to fill all of your needs.
Setting out from the trailhead, you will head to the southwest along the road and pass by the Spittal of Glen Muick Visitor Centre, before continuing on to the shores of Loch Muick. Here, you will meander at the water’s edge while taking in some stunning views that stretch across the lake towards Glas-allt-Shiel, a charming royal cottage that was constructed for Queen Victoria in 1868.
Climbing further uphill, you will enjoy some elevated views of the loch on your right, as you pass by a boggy stretch of terrain on your left. After a final push uphill, you will arrive at the summit of Broad Cairn. Here, you will enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding area, before heading back along the same trail for the return to the car park.
