Whether the aim of your next adventure in the Cairngorms is to take in the beautiful scenery along the winding River Dee or visit some fascinating historical sites near Ballater, the Ballater to Cambus o’ May Circular Walk will certainly have you covered.
Setting out from the trailhead at the Ballater Royal Station, you will make your way northeast in order to leave the village behind, following along the old railway line as it cuts across the countryside. On this stretch of the walk, you will pass by several interesting historical sites, including Tullich Chapel and the nearby Souterrain, a man-made grotto that is over 2,000 years old and was likely used as either a hiding place or to store provisions.
From here, you will follow the path as it passes by the Cambus o’ May Cheese Factory and continues along Old Deeside Road, skirting the edge of the River Dee until you arrive at a bridge crossing. After making your way over the bridge, you will make your way to the southwest through Torphantrick Wood, following the road alongside the river until you arrive back in Ballater where you started your adventure.
