Table of contents

The Crug Mawr Walk is a fun, albeit lengthy, walking route in Wales that will take you into the Black Mountains in the eastern corner of Brecon Beacons National Park. While out walking this route, you will initially follow a road that runs through a valley alongside Grwyne Fawr, before climbing uphill on a loop through the rugged terrain of the mountains. This is a fantastic option if you are looking for a bit of a longer walking route that is removed from the crowds of visitors around the central beacons.

Route Description for Crug Mawr Walk

Featuring a mixture of terrain that includes roadways, riverside settings, serene forests, and rugged mountain trails, the Crug Mawr Walk is an excellent trail for anyone that is in need of a longer route through the picturesque landscape of the Brecon Beacons in Wales.

Setting out from the car park next to Coed Cefn, you will follow Bellfountain Road to the northeast as it cuts across the Welsh countryside and passes through a small stretch of woodland terrain. Keeping right at a fork in the road, you will continue to make your way along the valley floor, before following the road up the hillside to the northeast.

Shortly after passing St Issui’s Church, the road will transition into a footpath and lead you around the mountainside to the northwest, eventually entering into a dense stretch of woodland terrain. After climbing uphill, you will make your way to the southwest across the rugged mountain terrain of Crug Mawr, enjoying some sweeping views across the surrounding landscape, before heading back down into the valley. Once there, you will meet up with the road from the initial leg of your journey, which you can follow back to the trailhead where you started.
