Route Description for Rio Grande Trail West
The Rio Grande Trail West is an amazing nature walk that is suitable for the whole family and a variety of other adventurers. Whether hiking, biking, running, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, this trek caters to outdoor enthusiasts of all sorts. When venturing the path in the summer months, it is worth noting that the path is almost entirely exposed, so expect and prepare for warm conditions. Additionally, this route is a crowd favorite, so if you are seeking an isolated experience, then you may want to consider another hike.
Departing from the trailhead, the Rio Grande Trail heads west along the banks of the Roaring Fork River. From here, you will be granted epic views of Red Butte looming above and can even spot other adventurers exploring the mountain top. Follow along the route and enjoy the sounds of the running water, before passing a set of small cascades that pour over the cliffside on your right. Enjoy the mesmerizing sight and continue your trek.
The endmost section of the trail passes the County Airport, so you might just get a sight of a small aircraft taking off! You will eventually meet the trail’s end at the intersection with Jaffe Park Spur. At this point, you will want to turn around and retrace your footing along the riverside path back to the trailhead.
