Route Description for Slide Mountain Trail
If you are after a lengthy, but pleasantly scenic, hiking route in the Angeles National Forest, then look no further than the Slide Mountain Trail. There is no mention of Slide Mountain at the trailhead or along the trail, so make sure to keep an eye out for FS18W04 on the gate.
Setting out from the parking area along the old Golden State Highway, you will follow the now-closed roadway as it cuts across the Southern California landscape to the northwest. Eventually, you will turn off to the left (at the above mentioned marking on the gate) and follow the wide path as it begins to climb uphill to the southwest.
The climb here is gradual, so take your time as you steadily gain elevation and appreciate the rugged beauty surrounding you. Eventually, you will arrive at the summit of Slide Mountain, where you can take in the panoramic views and even climb the fire lookout tower for a better vantage point - as long as it is staffed and you are permitted to do so. After taking in the views, simply head back along the same trail to return to your vehicle below.
