For those who want a tough adventure that still isn’t overly long, the Mount Disappointment and San Gabriel Peak Hike is a good option in Southern California to explore. This trail features a moderate amount of elevation gain packed into its fairly short overall distance, making it a real leg burner with awesome views.
Setting out from the parking area, the trail enters into the cover of the forest and bends to the south as it climbs uphill. Eventually, you will break off from the main path on a short detour that will take you to the northwest on a steep climb up Mount Disappointment.
After taking in the views, you will make your way to the southeast and head temporarily downhill, before climbing back up to the top of San Gabriel Peak. From here, simply backtrack along the trail to return to the trailhead.
