Learn which Camino de Santiago is the best for you
The French Way is the most popular Camino de Santiago—walked and biked by thousands of eager adventurers each year. Stretching over 780.0 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France to Santiago de Compostela, the infrastructure and network of on-route services along this Camino de Santiago pilgrimage are highly developed and abundant.
The Camino Francés travels through everchanging topographies—from the French Pyrenees, the mountains of Léon, the rural Galician countryside, and the vineyards of La Rioja– among other incredible destinations. This pilgrimage typically takes about a month to walk and requires some stamina!
The Portuguese Way is the second most popular Camino de Santiago that proposes two route variations from Porto, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela. Both the inland and coastal pilgrimages offer immersive cultural experiences, spellbinding scenery, and authentic cuisine.
The Camino Portugués Coastal travels over 270.0 km, tracing the rugged Atlantic coastline through the less touristy areas of Portugal. A more revered, and established passage, the Camino Central stretches 240.0 km through interior Portugal, wandering through olive groves, charming hamlets, and the remote countryside.
Travelling over 800.0 km from Irún to Santiago de Compostela, the Camino del Norte is the second longest Jacobean route. The beauty of this pilgrimage is unrivalled– wander along dramatic coastal cliffsides, sandy beaches, lush meadows, and through bustling seaside towns.
The Camino del Norte is one of the hardest, but most rewarding journeys, stretching through four regions in northern Spain: Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Demanding more than a month-long commitment, this arduous trek will put your endurance to the test.
Starting in Santiago de Compostela, the Camino Finisterre is a 90.0 km extension that does not satisfy the benchmark to receive a Compostela, but it is an excellent addition for those who have a few extra days to fill. Hike to Spain’s Western seaboard which was once considered the end of the earth—on the precipice of the Atlantic Ocean.
Explore the charming fishing villages, lush forestlands, and marvel in the beauty of the maritime scenery along this 5-7 day pilgrimage. The Camino Finisterre is a wonderful adventure for novice thru-hikers.
The Original Way is the oldest pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela– dating back to the 9th century. Setting out from Oveido, and travelling over 300.0 km through Northern Spain, this 12-15 day adventure attracts a mere 5% of yearly pilgrims. Challenging both your body and your mind, this route warrants the perfect opportunity for self-reflection and reconnection.
Explore the expansive countryside, tackle technical ascents in the mountainous region of Galicia and meander through charming medieval towns that exhibit the history and religiosity of Spain.
The English Way is the perfect introductory pilgrimage for novice thru-hikers. Offering two routes’ options—via Ferrol and via A Coruña—these treks boast the best of both worlds: coastal hikes and inland adventures.
The Camino Inglés via Ferrol travels over 115.0 km and is the shortest Camino that satisfies the benchmark for a Compostela. Contrastingly, the Camino Inglés via A Coruña stretches 75.0 km from the coast, missing the benchmark, but demanding only a 5-day commitment.
The Camino Invierno is a pilgrimage in and of itself, but it is also a popular detour for Camino Francés pilgrims avoiding the challenge of ascending the O Cebreiro Mountains. The Winter Way is the best option for intrepid adventurers heading out in the off-season due to favourable winter conditions and the manageable terrain.
This is a 260.0 km pilgrimage that travels through four Galician provinces: Lugo, Pontevedra, Ourense, and A Coruña. Explore the chestnut forests, the ancient Roman gold mines of Las Médulas, and lush vineyards.
The Silver Route departs from Seville and stretches over 960.0 km to Santiago de Compostela through four Spanish regions: Andalusia, Extremadura, Casilla y Leon, and Galicia. Demanding at least a month-long commitment, this pilgrimage has earned the title of the longest and toughest route—walked by only 3% of annual visitors.
Lacking pilgrim infrastructure, warranting extreme conditions, and technical terrain, this passage will put your physical and mental capabilities to the test. Those seeking to challenge themselves will thrive along this Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
With so many options it’s hard to figure out which is the right Camino for you. Click to fill in a short form and our adventure concierge will help you choose the perfect Camino for 2022.
What our customers say
Stephen L.
I’ve been using 10Adventures route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10Adventures made that happen.
Melinda S.
I was going through a tough time and really needed a getaway so I decided to book a tour through 10Adventures. My trip to Peru changed my life in so many positive and eye-opening ways. I am so thankful for the kind, empathetic team at 10Adventures.
Lina K.
I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!
Gabriela H.
Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!
History, Culture and Gastronomy
The Camino de Santiago is an ancient pilgrimage that dates back all the way to the 9th century, in Northern Spain. When the remains of the Apostle St. James were discovered, King Alfonso II ordered the relics to be buried in a bespoke basilica, which is known as the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. In the Middle Ages, thousands of pilgrims would trek from all corners of Europe to the cathedral to venerate the late St. James, carving what are now the popular Camino routes. Even today, it is believed that your sins will be forgiven if you complete at least 100.0 km of the pilgrimage, ending at the cathedral. Though some walk in search of spiritual or religious enlightenment, others are motivated by impeccable gastronomy. With routes stretching over 500.0 km through Iberia, there is no shortage of local cuisine to indulge in along the way. Try Pil Pil Cod in the Basque Country, sample Pulpo in Melide, sip on tempranillo in the province of La Rioja and savour scallops in Santiago de Compostela. Spain’s sundry cuisine is among the best in the world—and the Way of St. James boasts the perfect opportunity to expand your palate.
Diverse Natural Landscapes
Each Jacobean route that culminates at the Santiago de Compostela yields an exciting adventure through some of the most beautiful European landscapes and historic hamlets. Exhibiting both cultural and natural highlights, pilgrims can choose their trek based on topographic preference or spiritual significance. Explore UNESCO-listed sites, ancient basilicas, medieval ruins, and modern Spanish cities entwined with mesmerizing gothic architecture as you wander through the Iberian Peninsula. Popular landmarks on the Camino de Santiago routes include the ancient Roman goldmines of Las Médulas, the Castle of the Knights Templar in the city of Ponferrada, the Roman Walls of Lugo that date back to the 3rd century, and of course, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Roam the cobblestone streets of Puente de la Reina and immerse yourself in Galicia’s prolific countryside abundant with vineyards or opt for a more maritime experience—trace the rugged coastline in Portugal or meander along the beaches of the Bay of Biscay. No matter the Camino you choose, the indescribable beauty of the landscape and the relics that exhibit the history and religiosity of Spain boast an unforgettable experience.
